Why You Need to Backup Your Site

What if your website is hacked? What will you do? If you don’t have a backup, all of your content will be gone and you’ll have to build your site from scratch. Is there a sinking feeling in your stomach as you imagine that? That is why you need to set up automatic backups of your site!

How to Set up Automatic Backups

You have a few options here, including paid and free alternatives:

Free WordPress plugins:

BackWPUp

UpdraftPlus Backup & Restoration

Paid options:

ManageWP – my favorite, from $2.40 a month (be sure to choose professional to set up automatic backups)

VaultPress from $5/month

BackupBuddy – $80/year

Where to Store Backups

No matter what solution you choose, it’s ideal to set up backups somewhere other than the server where your site is hosted– because what if the whole server is wiped out? Storing the backups in a different location safeguards you from losing everything at once. Which means you’ll need a storage account with Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3, or other cloud storage services. (I used Google Drive for all my cloud storage and it’s very affordable!)
